2019 Rules

Important Deadlines

Futurity & Derby:

  1. Deadline for pre-entry draw: Postmark by March 15 with late fee
  2. Final entry deadline: 5:00 PM on April 1 with a $100 late fee
  3. Deadline for changes: April 2, 2019 at 5:00 PM
  4. Final draw will be posted by 10:00 PM on April 2

Futurity Slot Race:

  1. Deadline for entry: April 1 at 5:00 PM with $50 late fee.
  2. Deadline for changes: April 2 at 5:00 PM.
  3. Draw will be posted by Thursday, April 4, 2019.

Sweepstakes:

  1. Final entry deadline: Noon on April 5 with $50 late fee
  2. Deadline for changes: Noon on April 5
  3. Final Draw will be posted by 3:00 PM on April 5

Open Barrels:

  1. You can enter onsite beginning at noon on April 1 with no late fees. Cash or credit card ONLY! 
  2. Final entry deadline: Enter on site until sections fill or until last runner runs; on Sunday, April 7, books will close at last 25 runners. No late fees.
  3. Deadline for changes:  Start time of each section of the open.

Open Poles:

  1. You can enter onsite beginning at noon on April 1 with no late fees. 
  2. Final entry deadline: Enter on site until sections fill (maximum of 50 runners) or until last runner runs.
  3. Deadline for changes:  Start time of each section of the open. 

General Rules

  1. Western dress code will be enforced. Long sleeved shirts, western hats or helmets, jeans, and western foot apparel is required. Contestants must be wearing hats/helmets when they enter the competition area.
  2. No horse numbering is required. 
  3. If a horse is run out of order, it will be disqualified.
  4. There will be an arena judge at all times. Judges’ decisions are final.
  5. There will be a drag after every 5 numbers and a big drag after every 50.
  6. Contestants must be ready when called. Failure to be in position in the holding area will result in a disqualification. Contestants must be in holding pen during your drag.
  7. Reruns will be given only in the event of a time malfunction. If a rerun is given, it will be up to the judge and the contestant to decide when the rerun will take place. Reruns will not be given for contestant equipment breaking or for a rider’s decision to pull up.
  8. Contestants MUST maintain forward motion once in the alley way. Turning around will result in a disqualification.
  9. All pets must be kept on leashes at all times.
  10. If a contestant’s barrels or timers are misplaced, that contestant will be given a rerun at the conclusion of the round.
  11. Diamonds & Dirt Barrel Horse Classic™  reserves the right to create any new rule, or modify any existing rule, in order to better the sport or this barrel race.
  12. Diamonds & Dirt Barrel Horse Classic™  reserves the right to refuse entry for any reason.
  13. If any contestants’ times are tied, the prize money will be split equally. We will flip a coin to determine who wins prizes.
  14. Prizes will be mailed at the expense of the winner.
  15. To receive your winnings, a completed W-9 must be submitted at check in or payout will be delayed or even forfeited.
  16. All riders must present current (within 1 year) coggins to show office upon arrival. Horses from outside of Texas are required to have a health certificate (within 30 days).

Payouts and Awards

  1. Futurity, Derby, and Slot winnings will be paid to the owner as indicated on the horse’s registration papers. A W-9 must be on file for the owner in order for checks to be released.
  2. Sweepstakes, Open Barrels, and Open Poles winnings will be paid to the rider. A W-9 must be on file for the rider in order for checks to be released.
  3. Awards not picked up on site will be mailed at the recipient’s expense.
  4. Checks must be deposited within 60 days of receipt.

Refunds

  1. No refunds.
  2. Entries may be resold by the deadlines listed for each class.

Futurity

  1. Futurity will be 2 Long Go Rounds and a Short Go Round. Short Go will be determined by fastest qualifying times. Short Go time will be added to qualifying time to determine event champion.
  2. 40 fastest qualifying times will advance to the Short Round.
    If there are more than 350 entries, more finalists will be taken. Futurity open to horses foaled 2014 or later.
  3. Horses must not have competed in any type of barrel race competition prior to December 1, 2018.
  4. 75% payback of entry fees, 100% of added money. $50,000 added.
  5. Futurity open to all breeds.
  6. To request Futurity substitutions, contact Secretary@DiamondsandDirt.com.
  7. No refunds will be given for any reason.
  8. Stall is included in futurity entry fee.
  9. Amateur contestants MUST include a current copy of AQHA or APHA amateur card and meet all Diamonds & Dirt™ requirements. Diamonds & Dirt Barrel Horse Classic does not determine amateur status. The sanctioning organization (AQHA or APHA, for example) determines amateur status.
  10. Amateur Futurity Finals will take the fastest 10 amateur futurity qualifying times. Short Go time will be added to qualifying time to determine event champion. $5,000 added money will be paid out in finals.
  11. No entry that has not been paid in full will be allowed to run.
  12. You can opt to carry your futurity long go times over to the Open for $200. Each futurity horse may compete a maximum of four times in the Open (including the two carry overs).
  13. WPRA approved.
  14. Each futurity entry is guaranteed 1 exhibition on Tuesday, April 2.
  15. Deadline for entry: March 15 for pre-entry draw or by 5:00 PM on April 1 with a $100 late fee.
  16. Deadline for changes: April 2, 2019 at 5:00 PM.
  17. Final draw will be posted by 10:00 PM on April 2.

Derby

  1. Derby will be 2 Long Go Rounds and a Short Go Round. Short Go will be determined by fastest qualifying times. Short Go time will be added to qualifying time to determine event champion.
  2. 20 fastest qualifying times will advance to the Short Round.
  3. If a horse competed in futurities at age 4, it is eligible for the Derby at ages 5 & 6. Otherwise, the horse will be eligible for the Derby at ages 6 & 7.
  4. 75% payback of entry fees, 100% of added money. $15,000 added.
  5. Derby open to all breeds.
  6. To request Derby substitutions, contact Secretary@DiamondsandDirt.com.
  7. No refunds will be given for any reason.
  8. No entry that has not been paid in full will be allowed to run.
  9. You can opt to carry your derby long go times over to the Open for $200. Each horse may compete a maximum of four times in the Open (including the two carry overs).

  11. Each Derby entry is guaranteed 1 exhibition on Tuesday, April 2.
  12. Deadline for entry: March 15 for pre-entry draw or by 5:00 PM on April 1 with a $100 late fee.

Sweepstakes

  1. Sweepstakes is one race with fastest time guaranteed $10,000.
  2. Any horse/rider may enter and there is no limit to the number of horses a rider may enter.
  3. 75% payback of entry fees, 100% of added money. $10,000 added.
  4. Sweepstakes entry deadlines: March 15 for pre-entry draw. Enter with $50 late fee until noon on April 5.
  5. No refunds will be given for any reason.
  6. No entry that has not been paid in full will be allowed to run.
  7. You can opt to carry your sweepstakes time over to the Open for $100. Each horse may compete a maximum of four times in the Open (including carry overs).

Futurity Slot Race

  1. Slot race open to 4 and 5 year old horses who have not competed in any type of barrel race competition prior to December 1, 2018.
  2. Slot race is open to all breeds
  3. No refunds will be given for any reason.
  4. No entry that has not been paid in full will be allowed to run.
  5. You can opt to carry your slot race time over to the Open for $100. Each horse may compete a maximum of four times in the Open (including carry overs).
  6. Slot race is 100% payout.
  7. Deadline for entry: April 1 at 5:00 PM with $50 late fee.
  8. Deadline for changes: April 2 at 5:00 PM.
  9. Draw will be posted by Thursday, April 4, 2019.

Open 5D Barrels

  1. $15,000 Added
  2. Format: 5D with ½ second splits
  3. Entry Fee: $100 per entry; You may enter the same horse/rider combination once in each section (Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and/or Sunday) for a total of 4 open times.
  4. Payout: 100% of added money, 75% of entry fees, progressive payout
  5. One big payout: Checks and prizes will be awarded on Sunday, April 7, 2019
  6. Age sidepots are:Age as of January 1, 2019: Junior Kids (11 & under), Senior Kids (12 – 17), Adult (18 – 49), Senior Adult (50+). Entry Fee: $40 each. 3D, whole second splits, progressive payout.
  7. Enter online at www.enterthealley.com until 11:59 PM on Wednesday, March 20. You can enter onsite beginning at noon on April 1 with no late fees. 
  8. WPRA approved.
  9. Pre-entry draw will be posted on Sunday, March 24.
  10. Enter on site until sections fill or until last runner runs; on Sunday, April 7, books will close at last 25 runners. No late fees.
  11. Changes must be made in the show office prior to the start time of each section of the open. 

Open 3D Poles

  1. $5,000 Added ($2,500 each day)
  2. Format: 3D with whole second splits
  3. Entry Fee: $100 per entry; You may enter the same horse/rider combination once in each section (Friday and/or Saturday)
  4. Payout: 100% of added money, 75% of entry fees, progressive payout
  5. Each day will be paid out separately.
  6. Enter online at www.enterthealley.com until 11:59 PM on Wednesday, March 20. You can enter onsite beginning at noon on April 1 with no late fees. 
  7. WPRA approved.
  8. Pre-entry draw will be posted on Sunday, March 24.
  9. Enter on site until last runner runs. Limited it to 50 runners each day.
  10. Changes must be made in the show office prior to the start time of each section of the open.

Facilities

  1. All vehicles must stay off of grass areas. The facility has plenty of paved parking.
  2. Hook ups are available, but limited.
  3. Vendor booths are the only outlets where merchandise/services may be sold. All other retail transactions are strictly prohibited.
  4. Diamonds & Dirt Barrel Horse Classic™ and Brazos County Expo Center are expressly released and discharged from any and all liabilities, loss, injury or damage to persons or property. Attendees must adhere to all guidelines of both Diamonds & Dirt and Brazos County Expo Center. No exceptions will be made.
  5. UNDER TEXAS LAW (CHAPTER 87, CIVIL PRACTICE AND REMEDIES CODE), A FARM ANIMAL PROFESSIONAL IS NOT LIABLE FOR AN INJURY TO OR THE DEATH OF A PARTICIPANT IN FARM ANIMAL ACTIVITIES RESULTING FROM THE INHERENT RISKS OF FARM ANIMAL ACTIVITIES.

Dash Ta Fame Incentive

The $25,000 will be paid out to DTF own sons or daughters if and only if they place first, second, or third in the futurity average or open 1D average (two fastest open times per entry).

Amounts for each place:

  • 1st place – $6,250
  • 2nd place – $3,750
  • 3rd place – $2,500

How to sign up:

  • Enter on site prior to first run. Entry form will be in show office. You must provide a copy of your horse’s registration papers.
  • No entry fee.

Future Fortunes

  • Open Barrels – Saturday Section. Your Future Fortunes horse must make a run on Saturday to qualify for Future Fortunes payout. The run can be in the Open Barrels, Futurity Finals, Amateur Futurity Finals, Derby Finals, or Futurity Slot Race.
  • Each Future Fortunes entry must complete an entry form prior to your run. Each entry must include a copy of the horse’s papers.

Triple Crown 100 Payout

If your horse is Triple Crown 100 eligible, complete this form prior to competition and return it to the office.
